Why Does the Web Phone Ask for Microphone Access?
When using the web phone feature in RentEngine, your browser may request permission to access your microphone — even before you’ve started a call. Here's why this happens and what it means for your privacy:
How Microphone Access Works
- Device Readiness
The web phone is powered by Twilio, which requires the app to be ready to make and receive calls at any time. To ensure this, the app needs to detect which microphones and speakers are available on your device.
- Permission Prompt
As soon as you open the web phone or navigate to a page where it’s active, your browser may ask for microphone access. This allows the app to list available audio devices and prepare for seamless calling.
- No Recording When Idle
Granting access does not mean your microphone is being recorded or monitored. It is only used to transmit audio during active calls. Nothing is stored or sent while the app is idle.
- Privacy First
Microphone access is strictly used to ensure calls can start without delay. Outside of live calls, RentEngine does not listen, record, or transmit audio in any form.
What If I Deny Microphone Access?
- You won’t be able to make or receive calls via the web phone.
- Incoming calls won’t ring or connect.
- You can always re-enable microphone access from your browser’s settings.
Why Not Ask for Access Only During a Call?
- To avoid missing calls or introducing delays, the app requests microphone access up front. This way, it can ring and connect calls instantly — especially important for incoming calls that require fast action.
You're in Control
You’re always in control of your microphone settings:
- Change or revoke access at any time in your browser settings.
- No audio is captured or transmitted unless you're on a live call.
In Summary
- The web phone requests access to ensure it’s ready for incoming and outgoing calls.
- Microphone access does not mean recording is happening.
- Audio is only used during active calls.
- Your privacy is always respected — no exceptions.
