Troubleshooting your microphone for calls

Written by Alexander Stringfellow

Overview

If you can't hear the other person on a call, or your outbound calls drop as soon as they connect, your microphone permissions are likely disabled. RentEngine's phone system requires microphone access to place and receive calls in the Command Center on desktop and in the mobile app.

This article shows you how to re-enable microphone permissions on iPhone, Android, and Google Chrome.

How to allow microphone on iPhone

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone

  2. Scroll down and tap RentEngine

  3. Tap Microphone

  4. Select the toggle to Allow RentEngine to Access Microphone

Once enabled, restart the RentEngine app and try the call again.

How to allow microphone on Android

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android device

  2. Tap Apps (or Applications)

  3. Find and tap RentEngine

  4. Tap Permissions

  5. Tap Microphone

  6. Select Allow only while using the app (or Allow)

Once enabled, restart the RentEngine app and try the call again.

How to allow microphone on Google Chrome (desktop)

  1. Open Google Chrome on your computer

  2. Click the lock icon (or site information icon) in the address bar at the top, to the left of the URL

  3. Click Site settings (or Permissions)

  4. Find Microphone

  5. Change the setting from Block to Allow

  6. Refresh the page

Alternatively:

  1. In Chrome, click the three-dot menu (top right of the page) and select Settings

  2. Go to Privacy and security > Site settings > Microphone

  3. Under Not allowed to use your microphone, find app.rentengine.io

  4. Click the trash icon next to the entry to remove the block

  5. Reload the RentEngine page and grant microphone access when prompted

Important notes

  • Microphone permissions can be revoked automatically after a system update, device restart, or if you previously selected Block when prompted

  • The phone system requires microphone access for both inbound and outbound calls to function

  • Bluetooth headsets may need their own microphone permissions; check your device's Bluetooth settings if audio issues persist after re-enabling app permissions

  • If permissions are already enabled but issues continue, try fully closing and restarting the app or browser

Best practices

  • Grant microphone access the first time RentEngine prompts you

  • Avoid selecting Block or Don't allow if you plan to make calls from that device

  • Check microphone permissions as a first troubleshooting step before contacting support

  • Test audio with a quick internal call after updating permissions to confirm the fix
